Research

Our objective is to ensure that residents possess the appreciation, knowledge, and skills necessary to critically evaluate and produce scholarly work relevant to family medicine physicians in the United States.

To achieve this aim, we have purposefully allocated time within the residents' schedules for engaging in scholarly activities, encompassing areas such as performance and quality improvement, Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, and Graduate Medical Education (GME) sponsored projects. Furthermore, we expect residents to complete a minimum of one publication through various formats during their training.

Residents are given the opportunity to participate in an annual "Research Day," where they present their projects and case reports alongside those from other residency programs. They are also encouraged to present their work at various local, regional, and national conferences. Residents are required to complete 2 research projects within 3 years of training.

GME research and scholarship resources include:

  • HCA Electronic Library – over 8,450 e-journals, over 2,190 e-textbooks, and a librarian team
  • HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine – peer-reviewed PubMed indexed scientific periodical
  • Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) – database with 186 hospitals' data
  • Biostatisticians and Data Analysts – who will assist you with research and analysis
  • Analytical Tools – SPSS, SAS and R
  • Research Director – dedicated assistance to research projects, lectures and workshops
  • Medical Writer – assistance with manuscripts, articles, and IRB project reviews
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB) – for GME research oversight
  • Resident Travel Budget – support to present and publish scholarly activity
  • Annual Resident Research Day – regional conference for scholarly activity presentation
