Program overview

Our program offers the perfect balance of operative experience, academic rigor, and programmatic support. The residents function in a variety of settings within the program exposing them to the diverse patient population of Eastern Jackson County. Residents will graduate ready and confident to practice general surgery or obtain any fellowship they seek.

Balance in surgical training is everything. We seek to find balance between clinical service and meaningful education. Between complex surgery exposure and iterative simulation. Between serious patient care and collegial teamwork. The curriculum is designed to rely on the unique offerings of the hospital system including the 6 Da Vinci Xi robots, brand new state of the art simulation center, and high volume to produce the most capable and confident surgeons.

Welcome from our program director

Welcome to Centerpoint HCA Health Care General Surgery, and thank you for considering our program. We have been hard at work preparing for the arrival of our inaugural class. The faculty and I are full of anticipation and excitement as we build this program, and are eager to meet the residents who will play an active role in shaping the program as it grows.

Sincerely,
Charles Harper, DO

See Our Schedule

We're big enough to give you a wide range of surgical experiences, but small enough to know you as more than "Resident #4 on call." You'll get early hands-on experience and mentorship that feels personal — not robotic. We leave the robotics to the OR.
Strong, early, and progressive. Our residents are in the OR from day one, with increasing responsibility as skills develop. The apprentice style pairing of residents with attendings ensures frequent intra-operative teaching. We promise — your experience won't be limited to holding retractors (unless that's your desired fellowship goal).
Busy enough to make you a great surgeon, balanced enough that you can still find time for family, friends, and yes — even hobbies. Duty hours are respected, and wellness is a real priority, not just a checkbox.
Kansas City offers something for everyone: a vibey food scene, plenty live jazz, pro sports, family-friendly communities, and more. Whether you're into tailgating, fine dining, or exploring hidden taco joints, you'll find it here.
Absolutely. Each resident has direct access to faculty mentors who guide career planning, research, and personal development. Whether you're aiming for fellowship or private practice, you'll have someone in your corner to guide you along the way.
Our residents have multiple avenues to participate in clinical research, quality improvement projects, and national presentations. HCA offers robust research support. We encourage curiosity — and yes, we'll cheer loudly when your name shows up on PubMed.
We believe rested surgeons are better surgeons. Protected time off, wellness initiatives, and a culture that values balance mean you'll be supported both inside and outside the hospital.
