Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center boasts a Level 2 Trauma, Level 1 ICU, Level 3 NICU, and the only verified burn center in Idaho. We may live in a small town, but we have big name services and punch far above our weight. We routinely see highly complex patients and the majority of things that come to us are solved here. I'm frequently asked what someone training here should expect to see and my answer is resoundingly — everything! Idaho ranks near the bottom in access to healthcare which is a double-edged sword — it provides great learning opportunities, pathologic disease states, but may struggle in surveillance and finding things early. We exist at an intersection where we can change that opportunity for many and prolong health and life. Given our size we tend to be tight-knit, collegial, and self-reliant. I hope that all those that are looking to live in a growing rural area, that value the community they work in will see the prize and the opportunity to drive complex medical care will look to us and see that we offer exactly what you are wanting in a residency program.
About our program
At EIRMC we strive to ensure our residents receive the knowledge base essential to practice Internal Medicine either as a generalist or through fellowship, as evidence by the ABIM Board pass rate for our recent graduating classes, as well as our success in fellowship placement for our residents. As importantly, our residents develop into caring, competent, and compassionate internists through the nurturing, supportive environment provided by our excellent faculty, and our close-knit resident family.

In addition, with a full-time research coordinator residents get direct extensive experience in research and scholarly activity. With a fully equipped SIM Lab, residents receive hands on training to ensure procedural competency.

Mission Statement
The Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.
Program Overview
Our rotations are structured on a 4+1 block schedule where the residents will engage in 4 weeks of core rotation followed by 1 week of continuity outpatient clinic. There is daily protected didactics Monday through Friday with additional protected time set apart for things such as Report, Grand Rounds and Board Preparation.
During intern year residents will spend the majority of their time working on the wards, the ICU, Night Float and limited sub-specialty exposure. We believe it is important to have a strong foundation to build on.
As residents enter their second year, they will have many more opportunities to be in sub-specialty, supervisory positions, time in the emergency department, and the opportunity for away rotations for experience that cannot be obtained locally.
Third year residents round out their education and may spend time catching up in areas where they feel they need additional support like interventional radiology or anesthesiology for those going to smaller communities where procedural competency will be a cornerstone.
All residents are expected to participate in research and quality improvement. To facilitate this, we have an on-site research coordinator and maintain residents on the quality improvement hospital committees.
The above structure, coupled with the high acuity and expertise of our hospital are paramount in preparing the next generation of physicians that are not only acceptable, but exceptional.

Our case mix index is 2.54, which is >95th percentile nationally, and puts us as a top 20 teaching hospital. It means we get highly complex cases. Our catchment includes over 270,000 people, we have level 1 ICU, level 2 trauma, and the only burn unit in the state of Idaho
We do not have a call schedule! We have a designated Night Float rotation. We strictly follow the ACGME protocol for one day off in seven.
The Internal Medicine Residency accepts 10 residents per academic year with a total of 30 Internal Medicine Residents.
