The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at HCA Healthcare Kansas City is part of the HCA Healthcare Graduate Medical Education network. Program overview

Fellows within the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship program will be trained on various cardiac diagnostic imaging and testing that include but is not limited to electrophysiology studies, electrocardiograms (EKG), electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, cardiac stress test, Holter monitoring, and nuclear imaging testing. Fellows will also have the opportunity to train within one of the busiest electrophysiology labs within the region. The lab offers advanced treatment options for heart arrhythmia conditions, including cardiac ablation, left atrial appendage closure (LACC) implant, and pacemaker or cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) insertion.

Program Director

Rakesh Gopinathannair, MD, MA, FAHA, FACC, FHRS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiologist specializing in clinical cardiac electrophysiology with Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute at HCA Midwest Health in Kansas City and Clinton, MO. He currently serves as Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratories at Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute as well as Electrophysiology Medical Director at Research Medical Center.

Program details

Our program will prepare fellows to evaluate and manage patients with but not limited to arrhythmias, palpitations, syncope, anticoagulation maintenance, and risk for sudden cardiac arrest. Procedural competence is a critical portion of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program both inside and outside of the electrophysiology laboratory. Fellows will be trained to perform tilt testing, activation sequence mapping recordings, ECGs, and stress test ECG recordings among other testing modalities.

Our curriculum is designed to complement resident's rotations. Residents will have protected educational time to attend weekly didactic conferences.

  • Residents, fellows, and faculty will undergo an annual course in well-being to bring attention to burnout, depression, and substance abuse and the symptoms related to this.
  • The meaningfulness in the experience of being a physician - including protection of time with patients, minimization of non-physician obligations, and promotion of progressive autonomy - are areas a program will focus on to protect the resident and fellow working environment.
  • Access to behavioral health is available through the HCA Employee Assistance Program (EAP) on a 24-hour basis.
  • Residents have the opportunity, after consulting with their program director, to attend medical, mental health, and dental care appointments during work hours. It is also understood that there are circumstances in which residents may be unable to attend work, including but not limited to fatigue, illness and family emergencies without fear of negative consequences. The resident or fellow must still communicate timely with their program director if they will not be able to report to work.
  • Wellness committee
  • Adequate sleep facilities are provided to residents and fellows as needed and transportation for residents or fellows too fatigued to return home will be provided. Education regarding fatigue and the signs of fatigue will be provided for awareness and proper management.
  • During orientation, each resident and fellow will complete the Sleep, Alertness and Fatigue Education in Residency "SAFER" course.
