TriStar Neurology will expose you to cutting-edge, evidence-based, patient-centered care across the spectrum of neurologic disease, serving the local area and surrounding states. The HCA Healthcare/TriStar Nashville/Skyline Medical Center Neurology Residency Program trains and equips motivated residents in neurology to be highly competent, compassionate, professional, accessible, and productive clinicians, teachers, and leaders for HCA Healthcare facilities and other premier venues of clinical and academic neurology.
The vision for the HCA Healthcare/TriStar Nashville/Skyline Medical Center Neurology Residency Program is that of an acclaimed and diverse community of clinician-educators and physician scientists committed to high-quality, evidence-based patient care, innovative clinical research, and exceptional training experiences for students, residents, and fellows in neurology.
Program Overview
OOur 4-year categorical program trains a diverse group of residents in all facets of clinical neurology, preparing them for postgraduate subspecialty fellowships or careers in general neurology. Residents assume graded responsibility for patient care, with supervision and instruction appropriate to their level of experience and monitored progress toward independence.
Inpatient services emphasize complex stroke care, epilepsy, neuromuscular crises, and trauma, with additional experience in neurocritical care, neurorehabilitation, psychiatry, neuroradiology, clinical neurophysiology, and child neurology. Consultation experience addresses neurologic complications across a broad array of medical disease states, and outpatient clinics include both general neurology and subspecialty care. Most clinical experiences take place on the campuses of TriStar Skyline and TriStar Centennial Medical Centers. Altogether, our teaching hospitals have approximately 1500 beds, and about 3000 stroke admissions annually. Simulation training, community hospital experience, teleneurology, didactic exercises, and numerous elective rotations are also provided. A full-time director of research guides residents in scholarly projects.
TriStar training facilities include two certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers, an additional Thrombectomy-Capable Center, Level 1 Trauma Center, an inpatient rehabilitation unit, two dedicated Neurovascular Intensive Care Units, inpatient psychiatric hospital, children's hospital, and the nationally renowned Sarah Cannon Cancer Research Institute.
HCA Healthcare/TriStar Nashville is a GME consortium offering postgraduate residency training in a dynamic urban/suburban setting with close proximity to leading universities, medical schools, business centers, entertainment venues, professional athletic teams, houses of worship, family amenities, and the natural beauty of Tennessee. Residents completing our program will have a solid foundation in clinical neurology, as well as experience in clinical research and teaching. With an emphasis on developing expertise in the core disciplines and methodologies of neurology, our residents also experience innovative, high-performance practice while cultivating professionalism, ethical reasoning, leadership, and health equity awareness.

FAQ
Yes, we received our accreditation in April 2022, and expect to welcome our inaugural class of PGY2 residents in July 2023.Yes, we received initial accreditation in April 2022, and continued accreditation in January 2026.
Applicants must have passed USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 and have taken both components of Step 2 and/or have passed the COMLEX (Comprehensive Medical Licensing Examination) Level 1 and have taken both components of Level 2.
We do not have a minimum score and take a holistic approach to reviewing applications. We will review an applicant who has had multiple attempts keeping in mind this makes for a less competitive application.
Yes, residents must register for and take the Step3/Level 3 before the end of their PGY1 year. Residents must pass the Step 3/Level 3 exam before the end of their PGY2 year.
We accept J-1 visas only.
Residents entering our categorical program in the PGY1 year must have graduated from school no more than 2 years prior. Residents entering through a reserve slot in the PGY2 year must have been in continuous postgraduate (residency) training since graduation from medical school.
Research is a major portion of our residency program. Our residents are active participants of regional, national and institutional events that foster research and scholarly activity. Our faculty members and Division Research Director work very closely with residents to encourage publications and research according to the residents' area of interest.
Our program was recently approved by the ACGME for a complement increase and a conversion to the Categorical (4-year) format. For July 2027, there will be 6 Categorical positions available at the PGY1 level, and 2 Reserve positions available at the PGY2 level. We will no longer be taking candidates for the Advanced match positions.
