Program overview

The HCA Houston Healthcare/University of Houston (Clear Lake) Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is a three-year, ACGME-accredited training program dedicated to developing outstanding gastroenterologists who combine clinical excellence, procedural expertise, scholarship, and compassionate patient-centered care. The program is built upon the mission of HCA Healthcare: "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life."

Located in the growing and diverse Clear Lake region of Southeast Texas, our fellowship provides comprehensive training across inpatient, outpatient, endoscopic, and hepatology settings. Fellows gain experience caring for a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic, and biliary disorders while serving a diverse patient population throughout the Greater Houston area. Training occurs across multiple clinical sites, including HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, a 532-bed tertiary care hospital recognized for clinical excellence and advanced gastrointestinal services, along with affiliated ambulatory endoscopy centers and specialty gastroenterology clinics.

Our curriculum is designed to provide graduated responsibility and hands-on learning through extensive exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, motility disorders, colorectal cancer screening, and complex digestive diseases. Fellows work closely with experienced faculty who are committed to mentorship, professional development, and fostering future leaders in gastroenterology.

The fellowship features a robust academic experience including protected educational time, case-based conferences, journal clubs, simulation-based endoscopy training, multidisciplinary conferences, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly activity opportunities. Fellows also benefit from access to dedicated research support and a collaborative learning environment that emphasizes evidence-based medicine and lifelong learning.

Through a combination of academic rigor, individualized mentorship, diverse clinical experiences, and progressive autonomy, our goal is to graduate board-eligible gastroenterologists who are prepared for independent practice and committed to advancing digestive health within their communities and beyond.
