Curriculum Highlights

Our fellowship combines high-volume clinical training, structured didactics, procedural education, and scholarly activity across several complementary training sites.

Training Sites

Fellows receive clinical training at:

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake – The primary training site and home of the majority of inpatient pulmonary, critical care, and interventional pulmonary rotations.

Pulmonary and Sleep Physicians of Houston – Located adjacent to the main campus and providing dedicated outpatient pulmonary and sleep medicine experience.

HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland – An additional clinical training site providing exposure to a complementary patient population and practice environment.

Methodist Transplant Institute, San Antonio – Dedicated pulmonary transplant rotation.

Didactic Curriculum

Clinical training is complemented by a robust educational curriculum with approximately six dedicated educational sessions each week.

The curriculum includes:

  • Fellowship Boot Camp
  • Faculty-led core curriculum lectures
  • Pulmonary and Critical Care Board Review
  • Mechanical Ventilation Curriculum
  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Curriculum
  • ECMO Education
  • Simulation Laboratory Sessions
  • Thoracic Radiology Conference
  • Multidisciplinary Tumor Board
  • Clinical Case Conference
  • Journal Club
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference
  • Grand Rounds and Visiting Professor Lectures

The didactic curriculum is designed to progress from foundational concepts to advanced clinical reasoning, procedural competency, and independent practice.

Scholarship and Research

Dedicated research rotations provide fellows with protected time to pursue scholarly activity. Fellows are encouraged and supported in conducting clinical research, preparing case reports and other publications, and presenting their work at local, regional, and national scientific meetings.

Continuity Clinic

Fellows participate in a longitudinal outpatient pulmonary continuity clinic throughout all three years of fellowship, allowing them to develop long-term therapeutic relationships with patients and gain experience in the longitudinal management of pulmonary disease.

Continuity clinic is maintained during most rotations, with exceptions during intensive care and transplant rotations.
