Welcome from Our Program Director

On behalf of The University of Central Florida College of Medicine /HCA Healthcare GME Consortium, we welcome you to Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford! Our facility is a 221-bed teaching hospital that provides an impressive array of primary and specialty care services to patients in the greater Orlando Region. We are located in the beautiful city of Sanford, Florida on the shores of the serene Lake Monroe. Our hospital and GME staff are committed to our patients and strive to maintain a culture of caring that manifests into excellent inpatient and outpatient care for the diverse community that we serve.

Mission Statement

Our Mission is to provide an exemplary educational experience for our interns that will enable them to mature into compassionate and knowledgeable attending physicians of the future. We strive to fulfill our company mission: “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life”. Our excellent faculty will lead and educate our interns within a robust medical science curriculum in which emphasis will be placed on graduated responsibility and autonomy. Our interns will be given the opportunity to provide direct patient care in a multitude of clinical settings with the hope that they will achieve the necessary skills to become leaders in ever challenging health care system. Our goal is to nurture physicians who will provide excellent care for a diverse population of patients wherever they may champion the public good for decades to come.

Program Overview

The Transitional Year program will comply with the requirements of the ACGME for Core Rotations:

  • Family Medicine/ Internal Medicine outpatient clinic (140 hours minimum)
  • Emergency Medicine (140 hours minimum)
  • Critical Care Medicine (4 weeks minimum)
  • Internal Medicine Wards (12 week minimum)

The Transitional Year program will also offer electives rotations in several medical subspecialties including:

  • Cardiology, Nephrology Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, General Surgery, Administrative Leadership and Anesthesiology

Below are the requirements for the application/admission process:

  • ERAS application
  • MSPE
  • Transcript
  • Minimum 3 Letters of Recommendation (one being a department of medicine chair letter)
  • Passing scores on USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK)
  • Within 2 years of medical school graduation preferred

Osteopathic graduates

The same criteria listed above applies

COMLEX scores will be accepted in place of USMLE scores

International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

If you are an International Medical Graduate, you will need to provide the following information/documentation in addition to what is listed above to be considered for admission:

  • Valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
  • Clinical experience in the U.S. (hands-on externships preferred)

U.S. citizenship or permanent physician learner status to the United States is governed by the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, which is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The applicant must hold a visa valid for graduate medical education [exchange visitor (J-1)].
