"One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient."
-Francis Peabody MD
Welcome to GME at Portsmouth Regional Hospital! Dr. Peabody's quote is from an article he published in JAMA in 1927 about the tension in teaching between science and art in residency training. His article "The Care of the Patient" which I recommend to you (easily found with an internet search) calls us to remember what drew us to our medical profession: a desire to care for our fellow humans, treat disease and relieve suffering.
This commitment to service and caring is reflected, at least in part, in the personal statements that we all so carefully crafted for our applications. Those values and desires are a big reason why all of us are here today, both residents and attendings. Remembering what we wrote serves to renew our commitment to our chosen profession and invigorate our passion for learning.
Today, as in Dr. Peabody's day, residency is challenging both professionally and personally, and there are many of us here to support you as you pursue your goals. You will learn both the science and art of medicine through your rotations, lectures, grand rounds and other experiences. We are committed to your wellbeing, and part of how we support your humanity is manifest in how we value your input and ideas. Residents have shaped our wellness activities and the curriculum to balance learning, service, and wellbeing. Working together, residents and attendings make everything we do better, and we look forward to what we can do together as we learn and serve our patients and each other.
Sincerely,
P. Travis Harker MD, MPH
