Mission statement

Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals General Surgery Residency Program's mission is to train the upcoming generation of general surgeons to provide patients and the community with high-quality care and clinical excellence in all realms of care. As part of HCA Healthcare, a single mission drives us, "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life".

Our program boasts a wide range and depth of clinical care, one of its strengths. With an academically and clinically rigorous curriculum, residents will learn how to advocate for their patients, community, and profession from the dedicated board-certified faculty surgeons and will be expected to do so as residents in the program. The faculty, who are role models, will train residents to be responsive, compassionate, and sensitive to their patients' needs and treat everyone with respect.

Program overview

Our General Surgery Residency Program at Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals is a new, five-year program accredited by the ACGME for 15 categorical positions. Residents joining our program as an inaugural class will have a unique opportunity to engage in and play a role in the program's continuous evolution, shaping the training experience for future residents.

Through our sponsoring institution, Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals, residents benefit from a supportive environment, research opportunities, and cutting-edge technology. Residents are exposed to a diverse population of patients and a large network of experts. Our faculty are highly experienced surgeons dedicated to empowering residents through training and mentorship to emerge as skilled surgeons with clinical excellence. Residents will gain a well-rounded prospective on the larger context of health care, and hospital resources, to provide the optimal care to patients. As residents progress through our program, they will be equipped with exceptional clinical skills, plus qualities of compassion and leadership to make lasting impacts in their communities.

New residents receive an orientation stipend of $1,000.00, less applicable withholdings, in addition to the amounts above. Resident salaries are determined on an annual basis.

Our program accepts applications through ERAS.
Also known as CJW Medical Center, Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals span over two locations. The primary location for our residency program is at the Chippenham Campus located at 7101 Jahnke Road, Richmond, VA 23225. The Johnston-Willis Campus is located about 5.5 miles from the Chippenham Campus at 1401 Johnston Willis Dr, Richmond, VA 23235.
