Mission statement
As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.
Program overview
Thank you for your interest in our General Surgery Residency Training Program. Our organization is dedicated to educating future physicians who are thoroughly prepared in the basic science, clinical knowledge, cognitive and technical skills, and the judgment required of surgeons and surgical leaders.
In our five-year program, you will have many opportunities to grow and develop in an environment rich in patient care, educational experiences and research opportunities. We strive to actively develop young surgeons by cultivating our residents’ interests and mentoring them in pursuit of their passion.
An active outpatient clinic experience and regular teaching conferences round out the educational program. Our program will provide an excellent opportunity for the growth and development of our residents’ surgical careers.
Our goal is to train highly motivated individuals in the art and science of surgery who are capable immediately upon completion of the residency program of either entering practice or obtaining the most competitive subspecialty fellowships.
Welcome from the program director

General Surgery Residency Program
HCA Healthcare Kansas City
Located throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan area, our residency in general surgery offers a wide variety of experiences during surgical training that are entirely unique. We are a growing residency, with five positions available for each incoming class. Each resident not only receives an excellent educational and practical experience but is encouraged in their individualized pursuits of leadership, research, or community involvement. Our residents will rotate through several hospitals and outpatient surgery centers, managing patient care as a cohesive group at each hospital and working under the tutelage of dedicated attending staff. Our hospitals include a Level 1 Trauma Center, Burn Center, and “Centers of Excellence in Robotic, Bariatric, and Colorectal Surgery.” Each attending is committed to education and has chosen to create the next generations of great young surgeons, whether they remain as general surgeons or choose to enter a sub-specialty. All of the teaching staff are exceptionally well educated and trained in their chosen fields, providing exposure and experience at the forefront of surgical innovations in fields such as robotic, endoscopic, and vascular surgery, while maintaining expertise in the “bread and butter” of general surgery. Our philosophy is that the best surgical education is done in the operating room, and our residents operate early and often. Thank you for your consideration in our program and we hope to hear from you soon.

- The meaningfulness in the experience of being a physician – including protection of time with patients, minimization of non-physician obligations, and promotion of progressive autonomy – are areas a program will focus on to protect the resident and fellow working environment.
- Access to behavioral health is available through the HCA Employee Assistance Program (EAP) on a 24-hour basis.
- Residents have the opportunity, after consulting with their program director, to attend medical, mental health, and dental care appointments during work hours. It is also understood that there are circumstances in which residents may be unable to attend work, including but not limited to fatigue, illness and family emergencies without fear of negative consequences. The resident or fellow must still communicate timely with their program director if they will not be able to report to work.
