Welcome letter

Dr Jason BrockerWelcome! There’s a saying here, “Keep Austin weird.” I like to think this refers to the overwhelming laid-back attitude, vast array of voices and personalities, vibrant outdoor art and culture and, of course, the large live music scene. As a native Texan, Austin has always had a special place in my heart.

Austin has grown in leaps and bounds and is quickly becoming a center of technological advancement in multiple fields (Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and Tesla have headquarters here). This growth extends to the medical field as well. We know that in addition to providing the fundamental experience required to become an independent surgeon, the St. David’s Healthcare General Surgery residency program will go above and beyond to enrich your training opportunities as a surgical resident.

While South Austin Medical Center (SAMC) will be the main location for our residency, the program incorporates three additional St. David’s Healthcare facilities throughout the Austin area to ensure our residents have optimal clinical exposure to all aspects of General Surgery, including Vascular, Cardiothoracic, and Transplant Surgery. The St. David’s Healthcare Partnership has one of the busiest minimally invasive robotic surgery services in the United States. SAMC alone performs over 2,000 robotic cases per year and it can operate robotically 24/7, which is unique to most surgery services and nearly all surgery residency programs.

You are the next generation of surgeons, and training opportunities are important to consider in selecting your residency program. Residents trained here at St. David’s will have one-on-one mentorship for our robotic surgery curriculum and become robot certified prior to completion of the residency. Additionally, our trauma and emergency surgery volumes enable our program to provide the appropriate breadth of experience to prepare trainees for direct entry into the surgical workforce. Or, if interested in pursuing a fellowship, our graduates will be well prepared and have a competitive advantage in many subspecialties as fully-trained robotic surgeons.

Being part of the larger HCA Healthcare Graduate Medical Education system allows our program to utilize the largest patient database in the world and provides additional resources to harness your optimal scholarly potential. We at St. David’s Healthcare South Austin Medical Center cannot wait to welcome and train the next generation of well-rounded surgeons. Our faculty are motivated, excited, and ready to share their wealth of knowledge in both the operating room and classroom. Come join us, and let’s keep Austin weird.

Training and research

At St. David’s Healthcare Graduate Medical Education Surgery Residency Program, we aim to train well-rounded, capable physicians that provide quality healthcare services for patients and families in the community. At St. David's Healthcare we believe that we should provide exceptional care to every patient every day with a spirit of warmth, friendliness, and personal pride.

Training

Over the course of our program, residents will train under board-certified surgeons who serve as role models for our core values. Residents will be expected to demonstrate the mission of St. David’s Healthcare through the provision of patient-centered care in everyday clinical activities. St. David’s Healthcare Graduate Medical Education General Surgery Residency Program hopes to instill in its residents a desire for lifelong learning and scholarly activity, as well as provide them with the tools and experiences necessary to become competent, autonomous general surgeons.
The goals of our General Surgery Residency Program are to provide exceptional care and financial stability in order to train competent physicians in the practice of General Surgery. These goals are driven by our values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence (I.C.A.R.E.).

Research

HCA GME has commitment to scholarly activity, based on more than 30 million patient encounters each year, that bridges the gap between complimenting evidence and exceptional patient care. Merging the rigor of ACGME accreditation standards with high patient touch, our residents deliver care rooted in evidence-based medicine that demonstrates our mission to care for the improvement of human life.

Conference schedule

St. David's Healthcare Graduate Medical Education has a strong rigorous academic focus. Residents are trained by board-certified physicians utilizing evidence based educational curriculum.
Didactic sessions include: M & M conference, journal club, interactive computer modules, ABSITE, case conferences, grand rounds, tumor board, sub-specialty lectures, case reviews, root cause analysis interactive workshops, and collaborative care practice initiatives.

In addition to weekly and monthly didactic sessions, our program utilizes daily multidisciplinary bedside rounding focusing on the healthcare team approach to more actively engage the patients and their care team thus improving collaboration and patient outcomes.

Yes. The program facilitates an environment and provides residents with the appropriate resources to actively participate in clinical and/or laboratory research. The program will have a structured didactic curriculum to instruct residents on the fundamentals of research. Specific research skills in the curriculum include: evidence-based medicine; medical literature interpretation; study design, implementation and preparation for publication; informed consent for subject enrollment in research studies; Institutional Review Board – function and purpose; and basic statistics. This curriculum is supported by John Washington, the HCA Central and West Texas Division GME Research Director.
