Welcome from our Program Director

Dear Applicant,

We are proud and privileged to be among the most advanced medical training programs in the world. Do not think of this as “just a transitional year program” but rather think of it as a very important link between medical school and your future specialty training!

Mission Statement

The HCA Houston Healthcare West Transitional Year Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.

Program Overview

HCA Houston Healthcare West Transitional Year Residency Program is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program accepting 13 positions per year. Our vision is to produce well-rounded residents who have a balanced experience in a variety of clinical settings prior to entering advanced residency programs.

We proudly provide resident physicians with the diverse clinical training experience necessary to advance their fundamental clinical skills and prepare them for their future training programs.

Residents will have an opportunity to participate in scholarly activity, simulation labs and procedure workshops during their training. We have a great team of faculty members dedicated to the education and advancement of our future physicians.

The resident will learn how to evaluate and manage patients with common general medical conditions, gather an accurate and orderly medical history, learn how to perform a detailed and comprehensive medical examination, and integrate this information for optimal medical decision-making.

Faculty and senior residents will provide lecture presentations in inpatient medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and subspecialty topics in conjunction with procedure workshops, simulation labs, morbidity and mortality, journal club and grand rounds. Residents will have the opportunity to present during case conferences and participate in scholarly activity.

HCA Houston Healthcare West is a 302 licensed bed hospital with more than 500 of the regions most talented doctors, and over 1,300 employees. For over 30 years, we have consistently enhanced the quality of care our patients receive and continue to grow to meet our community’s needs. As of June 2020, our inpatient admissions were 6,495, with over 24,000 ER visits, and 2,000 surgeries.
