Program overview

The HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited program offering 25 categorical positions annually. Our program is located in Webster, Texas.

Residents will engage in rotations at five different locations: HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, Mainland Medical Center, Clear Lake Medical Group – Houston, CLS Health, and Interventional Pain and Recovery Center, PLLC. These diverse sites provide residents with extensive exposure to various medical experiences.

HCA Houston Clear Lake is a 532-bed acute care hospital featuring a Level II Trauma Center, Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and a dedicated pediatric emergency center. Notably, we are the sole exclusive heart hospital south of the Texas Medical Center. We take pride in offering resident physicians a comprehensive clinical training experience, fostering the development of their core clinical skills, and preparing them for their future careers.

The core aim of our three-year Internal Medicine Practice Residency Program centers on delivering a structured and progressive curriculum with a strong focus on education. Our residents will acquire the essential skills and competencies necessary to thrive in primary care, hospitalist roles, or pursue subspecialty training with confidence. Rotations encompass all aspects of inpatient and ambulatory care departments.

Curriculum and rotation schedule

Residents will have protected time to participate in daily morning report and noon conference. Multidisciplinary grand rounds, quality improvement, and journal club will be hosted monthly. All conferences will be available through Webex in case a resident is on a rotation away from the primary site or in the case of other extenuating circumstances that prevent in-person attendance.

Frequently Asked Questions

We don't have a minimum Step 1 or Step 2 score requirement. We look at each applicant individually. We do not have a preference on number of attempts to pass. Osteopathic graduates do not need to take the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX exams. COMLEX scores correlate well with USMLE scores.
Yes – we do expect our applicants to take both exams prior to interview.
No. It must be obtained prior to July 1, 2025.
At this time we are only accepting J1 visas.
Yes, we will be doing all interviews virtually this year.

About our rotation sites

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake will serve as the primary clinical training site for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Clear Lake is a 532-bed full-service acute care hospital with a Level II Trauma Center, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and dedicated pediatric emergency center. Clear Lake is the only exclusive heart hospital south of the Texas Medical Center.

Rotations at Clear Lake include addiction medicine, cardiovascular disease, continuity clinic, emergency medicine, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology/oncology, hospice and palliative medicine, infectious diseases, inpatient medicine, intensive care unit, nephrology, neurology, night float, pulmonology, and elective rotations. The Internal Medicine continuity clinic is located offsite.

Mainland Medical Center

HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland Medical Center is a 222-bed, acute care facility that has served the Galveston area for over 70 years. Mainland offers a full range of specialized healthcare services including emergency care, heart and vascular services, physical therapy and rehabilitation, wound care, and orthopedic surgery.

Residents will rotate through Mainland during PGY-1 for their inpatient medicine experience and during PGY-2 for their intensive care unit and night float experience.

Clear Lake Medical Group - Houston

Clear Lake Medical Group is a primary care practice which provides comprehensive medical services, including evaluation, diagnostic testing, and management of health and wellness.

Residents will care for their own panel of patients in the Clear Lake Medical Group during PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-3 every fifth week. The Clear Lake Medical Group rotation will include a diverse patient population of medically complex adult patients. The continuity clinic experience will focus on treating and managing patients in the outpatient setting. The residents will learn how to evaluate the patient in detail, develop evidence-based plans, assume the role of primary provider for a personal panel of patients, and develop the necessary skills to provide high-quality longitudinal care.

CLS Health

CLS Health multispecialty clinic, located in Webster Texas, is dedicated to providing its patients with comprehensive specialized medical care. It believes that compassion, knowledge, and skills are necessary to deliver the best care.

Residents will gain ambulatory experience during PGY-2 in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism and in PGY-3 in nephrology, infectious disease, and rheumatology. Residents will gain knowledge and skills in coordinating subspecialty care for patients across settings in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team

Interventional Pain and Recovery Center, PLLC

Interventional Pain and Recovery Center, PLLC is an outpatient treatment office that serves Houston Texas, and the surrounding community. The interdisciplinary healthcare team includes a board-certified addiction medicine physician, case workers, nurses, and addiction therapists. This practice provides substance abuse treatment, behavior management, substance use disorder education, medication, and procedural interventions that are important to address pain, behavior management, and therapeutic modalities. The internal medicine residents will receive the required clinical experience and education in addiction medicine at this participating site through a 4-week rotation during PGY 3.
