HCA Florida Aventura Hospital requires that 28 weeks of a transitional year resident's training be devoted to a discipline that offers fundamental clinical skills, including emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics or surgery.
We satisfy these requirements with the following rotations: ICU, ED, SURG and IM. The transitional year consists of thirteen blocks and is designed to provide a comprehensive experience in general medicine, in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Sample block schedule
A block schedule for a transitional year resident may look like this:
- Inpatient Medicine: 10 weeks
- Critical Care: 4 weeks
- Ambulatory Clinic: 4 weeks
- Surgery: 4 weeks
- Emergency Medicine: 8 weeks
- Electives: 12 weeks
- Night Float: 4 weeks
- Psych: 2 weeks
- Vacation: 4 (20 days of PTO) weeks
