First Year Fellow
The First Year Fellow in gastroenterology will spend 12 months in clinical gastroenterology, which will include monthly rotations with multiple faculty members. During that time, the fellow will be expected to develop basic endoscopic procedural skills, diagnostic skills and treatment approaches. Supervision will be carried out for all consultations, endoscopic procedures, hospital rounds and patient contact.
Evidence-based medicine and treatment will be stressed in the most cost-efficient and thorough manner. The First Year Fellow will be actively involved in teaching rounds, clinical conferences, grand rounds, morning report and tumor board. The First Year Fellow will also begin a research project.
The First-Year Fellow in gastroenterology will participate in ambulatory clinics, which will be Faculty supervised.
Second Year Fellow
The Second Year Fellow in gastroenterology will spend 12 months in clinical services, which will include endoscopic procedures, which may be more technically advanced than those in the first-year program. This will include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
Time will be spent both at the major facilities, HCA Florida Largo Hospital and the Bay Pines Veterans Administration Medical Center, and elective opportunities will be included regarding hepatology, esophageal motility, research and other programs approved by the teaching faculty.
The Second Year Fellow will become a primary teaching resource for medical students, residents and first-year gastroenterology fellows. The Second Year Fellow will also participate actively in morning report, grand rounds and lectures.
Third Year Fellow
The third year of the fellowship program in gastroenterology will be comprised of three months of clinical gastroenterology and elective programs which will include research, therapeutic endoscopic procedures-specifically endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and other tertiary endoscopic procedures.
The Third Year Fellow will also be expected to participate actively in conferences and present Grand Rounds, as well as regular lectures. The Third Year Fellow will also be actively involved in the teaching of medical students, residents and first- and second-year gastroenterology fellows.
