Welcome from our Program Director

Thank you for your interest in our program! In addition to its friendly and supportive environment, our Transitional Year Residency Program is designed to give our residents a solid foundation in clinical medicine to prepare them for their future training programs.

The aim of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital’s Transitional Year Residency program is to prepare its trainees for a host of specialties beginning with the familiarization of the standards set forth by the ACGME Core Competencies.

The HCA Florida Ocala Hospital Transitional Residency Program's mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders.

This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the resident's clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values and ideals.

Program Overview

The Transitional Year Residency Program is an ACGME accredited program.

The goal of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital’s Transitional Year Residency program is to prepare its trainees for a host of specialties, beginning with the familiarization of residents to the standards set forth by the ACGME Core Competencies. Those competencies are patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, systems-based practice and professionalism.

Transitional year residents are introduced, trained, and evaluated on their abilities to meet or exceed expectations within ACGME milestone competencies during their transitional year training. Prior to the rotation start date, residents are provided specific goals and objectives that are subsidiary to the below overall program goals and objectives.

Program details

Patient care

The transitional year resident must demonstrate the ability to thoroughly evaluate assigned patients and complete an appropriate history and physical examination. The resident should also be able to generate an appropriate diagnostic and management plan for assigned patients and should demonstrate the ability to produce appropriate documentation summarizing the evaluations and treatment plan.

Medical knowledge

The transitional year resident must develop an adequate knowledge base of basic pathophysiology and differential diagnosis for common clinical problems. The resident should also demonstrate appropriate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The transitional year residents will be given a structured curriculum and resources in preparation for the USMLE Step-3 or COMLEX 3 exams. Transitional year residents are also required to attempt USMLE Step-3 or COMLEX 3 examination during the PGY1 term.

Practice-based learning

The transitional year resident must demonstrate a willingness to obtain feedback and learn from errors committed. Transitional year residents should demonstrate a basic understanding of evidence-based medicine and demonstrate efforts to search the medical literature and read about problems detected in assigned patients.

Interpersonal and communication skills

The transitional year resident must produce timely, accurate and complete medical records. This should include a complete history and physical examination, discharge summary, hospital progress notes and outpatient clinic notes.

The resident should demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with patients, families, nurses, staff physicians and resident peers.

Professionalism

The transitional year resident must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities. This includes placing the needs of patients first, maintaining a commitment to scholarship and striving for continued improvement throughout residency training.

The transitional year resident must also demonstrate respect in dealing with patients and families as assessed by feedback from patients and nurses. Additionally, residents must demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the need for patient confidentiality, informed consent and compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Systems-based practice

The transitional year resident must demonstrate the ability to perform well in four different institutions that are part of the residency program. This includes arranging proper care and mastering the medical record systems used by HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and its ambulatory clinic partners and providing care to patients of very diverse age, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds encountered at these sites.

Residents must demonstrate basic cultural competence skills in dealing with diverse patient populations encountered during these experiences. Each transitional year resident will also learn the principles of patient safety and quality improvement and will actively participate in a quality improvement project that they help to design and develop during the year.

Clinical skills:

  • Accurate and timely completion of documentation
  • ACLS certification
  • Arterial puncture
  • Management of uncomplicated superficial skin laceration
  • Performance of aseptic technique
  • Performance of basic literature appraisal
  • Performance of medical literature search
  • Performance of simple suturing
  • Placement of a nasogastric tube
  • Placement of bladder catheter
  • Placement of intravenous access device (peripheral and central)
  • Venipuncture

  • Daily case presentations
  • Weekly specialty conferences
  • Monthly mandatory conference series
    • Grand rounds
    • Quality assurance meetings

  • Research/quality improvement projects

The research model is based on a “public health” approach, focusing on the entire episode of care and will be supported by the wealth of resources of the HCA Healthcare system. Inpatient wards and clinic areas will emphasize outcomes-related research.

Salary

The following salary is for the fiscal year 2023-2024 and may differ from future years salaries.

  • PGY1: $59,627

Benefits

  • Vacation leave: PGY1 residents will accrue vacation leave at the rate of three weeks (five working days plus weekends) per academic year
  • Sick leave: Residents will accumulate 10 days of sick leave over each academic year
  • Educational leave: Will be available but must be pre-approved by Program Director

    • Retirement: 401(a) FICA Alternative Plan
    • ACLS, BLS, and PALS training and certification provided by the hospital at no charge
    • Laptop computer to access electronic medical records and library from hospital or home

Insurance

  • Low-cost medical and dental coverage for both resident and family
  • A disability policy will be provided along with the option to purchase additional coverage
  • Residents are automatically enrolled in a life insurance policy that offers a basic life benefit of $25,000
  • Professional liability insurance is provided
