Adela Casas-Melley, MD, MBA
Dr. Casas-Melley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and History from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. She also has a master's in medical science from Emory University. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, and she recently completed a master's in business administration from Auburn University.
She completed her general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia followed by a Pediatric Surgery fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Casas-Melley started her career at St. Christopher’s Hospital where she practiced pediatric surgery as well as pediatric liver and kidney transplantation. Soon after she moved her practice to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware where she practiced until she moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 2006. There she helped open a new Children’s Hospital and started a pediatric surgical department. She was instrumental in starting a general surgery residency at Sanford School of medicine and helped develop the curriculum for the program. She joined the faculty at Nemours Hospital for Children in Florida as the Chair of the department of Surgery in 2016. She has been involved with the General Surgery residency at Osceola since its inception as core faculty.
Dr. Casas-Melley has given 34 major research presentations and has written 24 peer-reviewed publications. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, The American Pediatric Surgery Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Eastern Association for surgery for Trauma, Children’s Oncology Group, Western Surgical Association, and is Board Certified in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.
Throughout her medical career, Dr. Casas-Melley has been actively involved in graduate medical education. She is especially excited about the opportunities to take the helm of the General Surgery program at Osceola and build on past successes with new energy and enthusiasm.
