As program director, I welcome you to review our program structure and the opportunities available to those that train with us. We are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and are a non-pyramidal program with three categorical surgical positions per year.
There are no preliminary surgery residents to dilute the operative experience. Our faculty are eager to challenge opinions and to encourage critical thinking. This is essential to fostering the depth of understanding needed for sound surgical judgment. Located in the heart of Central Florida, our program allows our residents to experience the benefit of an ethnically and culturally diverse environment.
Our approach to graduate surgical education is based on the long-recognized need for lifelong learning. Well before this became a popular mantra on medical school campuses, surgeons had been continuously learning and striving to improve patient outcomes with Morbidity and Mortality conferences for as long as formal surgical training has existed in the US.
In the 21st century, this has matured to include simulation training, real-time case feedback, video case review, and objective evaluation of case performance. To progress as a resident, it is paramount to develop the skills that allow for a critical assessment of new information and the ability to incorporate it into evidence-based care decisions. This allows for progressively greater responsibility in decision-making.
Similarly, as operative proficiency grows, and minor procedures are technically mastered progressively greater intraoperative responsibility is earned with more major cases.
Our program is excited to offer a learning environment where you optimize your potential and achieve the goal of becoming a qualified, well-rounded, confident general surgeon. As a relatively new surgical residency program, we regularly take resident input on the program and make changes annually to continuously improve our resident experience.
Thank you for your interest in our program. We hope you consider us for your residency training needs. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Adela T. Casas-Melley, MD, MBA
