PGY1 rotations

Intern (PGY1) year is the foundational year, during which residents build the breadth of their knowledge base through immersive experiences. In addition to the time spent in continuity clinic, PGY1 residents rotate through a few of our local HCA hospitals to learn aspects of pediatric and adult inpatient care, emergency medicine, cardiology, as well as obstetrics neonatal medicine. Continuity care is one of our top priorities, though, so throughout PGY1 year residents return to their continuity clinic at least once a week to see their primary care patients.

The second year of residency is the transitional year, during which residents progress from learners and front-line clinicians to senior residents. Equipped with a solid foundation from intern year, PGY2s build their level of responsibility for patient care and for the education of junior residents and medical students, as a senior resident on the FM inpatient team and in clinic. Second year includes exposure to rotations beyond the walls of HCA, too, with community-based partnerships throughout Lees Summit area, as well as rotations in health systems management. The amount of time spent outpatient at the Lee’s Summit Family Medicine Center increases significantly, as residents grow more comfortable and confident in their skills as a primary care physician.

Graduates may consider fellowships in areas like surgical OB, sports medicine, palliative care, and faculty development. Upon completion of the 3-year rotation curriculum, residents are prepared to go directly into practice as attendings at residency programs (with and without OB), FQHCs, community-based organizations/ clinics and hospital-based programs.
