Each year is divided into 13 four-week rotation blocks.

The majority of rotations are at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and affiliated medical practices in the area.

The adult inpatient medicine service is staffed by faculty physicians and attending hospitalists at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. There will be an in-house attending 24/7. There is no overnight call when on the inpatient adult medicine service; instead, there is a dedicated night float rotation.

Continuity Clinic

The foundation of the resident educational experience is the continuity clinic.

Residents care for their panel of patients on an increasing scale throughout their residency:

  • PGY1: atleast one day per week
  • PGY2: about one and a half days per week
  • PGY3: about two days per week

There are two continuity clinics: Goodwin Community Health in Somersworth and Appledore Family Medicine in Portsmouth. Goodwin Community Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center and Appledore Family Medicine is a hospital-owned practice near Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Four residents from each class will be at each continuity site.

Through the continuity clinic experience, residents discover the rewards of a longitudinal relationship with patients and work to address the overall needs of the patient. Each resident gains knowledge in team-based care, team dynamics and leadership role on the care team.

The continuity clinic is also a valuable learning space for quality improvement, population health, and integrated care.

Conference Schedule

Educational half day

Every Wednesday afternoon is dedicated to education in which residents engage in a four-hour block of didactics teaching. This includes training at the simulation center, case conferences, lectures, and hands-on procedure training. All residents attend unless on the adult inpatient rotation, away rotations, or night float. Examples of subjects and formats include:

  • Disease process-based subjects (i.e., COPD, CAD, DM, etc.)
  • Journal club
  • Morbidity and Mortality conference
  • Individual, resident-led, evidence-based medicine presentation
  • Board review
  • Ethics
  • Communication skills development (i.e., motivational interviewing, crucial conversations etc.)
  • Simulation center scenarios

We are delighted to have a new space built for resident education with a multi-room conference center that can open up to seat 90 people. This is adjacent to the simulation center with three high-fidelity bays for resident and staff education. This is located in a newly constructed building across from the hospital.

Inpatient adult medicine

While the family medicine is scheduled for their inpatient adult medicine rotation they attend internal medicine noon conference at Portsmouth Regional Hospital instead of the Wednesday afternoon didactics. Noon conference is held daily from noon — 1 p.m. to enhance the learning on this rotation. The noon conferences consist of a one-hour didactic session on both general medicine and subspecialty topics.

Scholarly activity

Scholarly activity is a required component of our program's curricula. As a part of the residency program, residents engage with hospital committees and must participate in at least one quality improvement project before the end of their PGY2 year. During the residents PGY3 year they each participate in creating a grand rounds presentation with support from our dedicated faculty members. It is our hope, that under the mentorship of a faculty expert and division research director, each resident will develop a project that embodies not only their talents but also their passions.
