William Maynard, MD
Program Director
Dr. Maynard joined the program in October 2020 as associate program director. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1992 and completed his residency at the University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Maynard has over 28 years of experience in the medical field.
Britney Friesen, MD
Associate Program Director
Dr. Friesen is core faculty on the inpatient medicine rotation. This rotation provides residents a solid base to build upon their medical knowledge, patient care, and procedural skills. Residents gain experience in managing acutely ill hospitalized patients with a focus on coordination and delivery of multidisciplinary, efficient, evidence-based acute care.
Jennifer Johnson, MD
Dr. Johnson is our critical care/ICU rotation director. Under her guidance, residents learn to evaluate and treat complicated medical and surgical patients in the ICU. She is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher and has research interests in ICU liberation and the pharmacotherapy of ICU delirium.
Frank K. VanDevender, MD
Dr. VanDevender participates in the supervision of the residents in their continuity clinics and with the administration of the program, research, and scholarly activity. He leads the program’s focus on faculty and resident wellness and serves on the program’s clinical competency committee and program evaluation committee.
Michael Kaminski, MD
As core faculty, Dr. Kaminski assists with program administration, structured didactics, and mentorship in the continuity clinic. Residents gain experience in the diagnosis and management of the central nervous system and neuromuscular disorders encountered in clinical practice. He brings enthusiasm and a vast fund of knowledge to the program.
William Lizarraga, MD
Dr. Tony Lizarraga has been a general internist at The Frist Clinic since 2009. Having completed his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and residency and chief residency at Brown University, he continues to enjoy the longitudinal relationship with his patients in the clinic and hospital.
Joseph Garrido, MD
Dr. Garrido is core faulty on the Inpatient Medicine rotation. This rotation provides residents a solid base to build upon their medical knowledge, patient care, and procedural skills. Residents gain experience in managing acutely ill hospitalized patients, focusing on coordination and delivery of multidisciplinary, efficient, evidence-based acute care.
Adrian Jarquin-Valdivia, MD
Dr. Jarquin-Valdivia is the core faculty on the Neurology rotation. He is originally from Nicaragua, and he went to medical school in Honduras. He completed full Internal Medicine training at UT Southwestern and the University of Utah, to later train in Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His fellowship at UCSF was in Neurocritical Care, Critical Care, and Stroke. He also holds board certifications in Neuroimaging and Neurosonology. His interests are patient safety, standardization of care, early knowledge, and technology adoption.
