Rotation Schedule
PGY-1 Rotation Breakdown
General Orthopedics (4 months)
- Introductory exposure to hand, orthopedic trauma, joint/sports, developing physical exam, diagnosis, and operative skills.
- Act as junior resident for the service
- Responsible for consults and inpatient management of trauma patients, fracture management, and assisting in operations.
Plastic Surgery (1 month)
- Focus on soft tissue handling, suturing techniques, facial trauma, and cosmetic plastic surgery.
Musculoskeletal Radiology (1 month)
- Work with MSK radiology attendings for introductory exposure in reading and interpreting radiographs, CTs, and MRIs.
General Surgery Trauma (1 month)
- Focus on managing polytrauma patients and trauma alerts in a Level 1 trauma center.
Anesthesia (1 month)
- Exposure to anesthesia care including intubation, line placement, and nerve blocks.
Vascular Surgery (1 month)
- Act as junior resident on vascular service
- Responsible for consult and floor management. Opportunity for exposure to vascular procedures.
Emergency Medicine (1 month)
- Exposure to ER triage and orthopedic evaluations including fracture management and reductions.
PGY-2 Rotation Breakdown
Sports (4 months)
- Focus on spectrum of sports pathology including rotator cuff pathology, meniscus tears, ACL reconstructions, etc.
- High volume knee and shoulder arthroscopy
General Orthopedics (4 months)
- Build on general orthopedics from intern year
- Develop both inpatient and outpatient management skills and hone technical skills in the OR.
Orthopedic Trauma (2 months)
- Manage the inpatient trauma service and assist in fracture management.
- Gain more autonomy in the OR with senior and attending oversight.
Pediatric Orthopedics (3 months)
- Nemours Children’s Hospital – Orlando, FL
- Focus on pediatric orthopedic trauma, congenital orthopedic pathology, and developmental orthopedic pathology
- Team based rotation with visiting residents
- Primary call responsibilities
PGY-3 Rotation Breakdown
Foot and Ankle (4 months)
- Focus on breadth of foot and ankle pathology including reconstruction, trauma, sports, etc.
Spine (4 months)
- Exposure to elective spinal deformity surgeries with neurosurgeon faculty
Hand and Upper Extremity (4 months)
- Focus on hand/upper extremity trauma, degenerative conditions, shoulder arthroplasty, etc
PGY-4 Rotation Breakdown
Trauma (3 months)
- Chief of trauma service at a Level 1 trauma center.
- Lead the orthopedic trauma service, teach junior residents, and gain heavy operative experience.
Adult Joint Reconstruction (4 months)
- Preceptorships with multiple attendings
- Focus on total knee and hip arthroplasties and complex revision surgery with exposure to robotic and navigation technologies.
Pediatric Orthopedics (3 months)
- Nemours Children’s Hospital
- Run inpatient service as senior with resident team
Orthopedic Oncology (2 months)
- Preceptorship with Dr. Howard Rosenthal at University of Kansas.
- Focus on benign and malignant tumors, limb salvage, and reconstruction.
PGY-5 Rotation Breakdown
Hand and Upper Extremity (2 months)
- Operate independently, refine surgical skills, and improve management ability.
General Orthopedics (3 months)
- Preceptorships with attendings of the resident’s choosing.
- Focus on developing independent operative ability across general orthopedics.
Advanced Clinical Experience (2 months)
- Elective experience based on specialty interest.
- Can include an away rotation at another institution to deepen skills in a specific area.
Foot and Ankle (2 months)
- Focus on developing independent operative ability of foot and ankle conditions.
Sports (2 months)
- Further refine arthroscopic and sports injury management skills.
Orthopedic Trauma (1 month)
- Chief of trauma service.
- Lead orthopedic trauma service and instruct junior residents, developing the autonomy and confidence to operate independently.
