Program Curriculum
The 36-month curriculum at HCA Florida Westside Hospital assures that the resident achieves the overall competencies identified by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) and is prepared to enter clinical practice upon completion of the residency.
Those competencies identified by the CPME are listed in the CPME 320 document, specifically on pages 22-25 (requirement 6.1). Every resident must achieve all competencies in order to successfully complete the program. The competencies are assessment-validated. The resident is required to review the attached competencies and assessments and obtain an assessment following the completion of each rotation.
The resident must complete both podiatric and non-podiatric rotations as required by the CPME documents 320 and 330.
Satisfactory completion of training requirements is acknowledged by receipt of a graduation certificate. If a resident fails to comply with the policies set forth by the program or by the CPME, then the resident may be terminated and will not receive a graduation certificate.
The resident will complete all non-podiatric rotations during the first and second year of residency.
The competencies for each rotation are specific to each rotation and are included in this manual. The resident must review these competencies prior to beginning each rotation. When the resident is not assigned to a specific non-podiatric rotation, the resident completes the competencies specified for podiatric medicine and surgery.
The following non-podiatric rotations will be completed (as required by 6.3 in CPME 320, July 2011):
- Medical imaging: 2 weeks
- Pathology: 2 weeks
- Behavioral sciences: 2 weeks
- Infectious disease: 4 weeks
- Internal medicine: 4 weeks
- Pain management: 2 weeks
- Wound care: 2 weeks
- General surgery: 4 weeks
- Plastic surgery: 2 weeks
- Vascular surgery: 2 weeks
- Anesthesia: 2 weeks
- Emergency medicine: 4 weeks
- Orthopedic surgery: 4 weeks
