Mission Statement

The Trident Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.

Program Overview

The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Trident Medical Center is a newly accredited, rigorous three-year program designed to train the next generation of physicians and physician leaders.

Our collegiate approach to learning fosters excellent opportunities for professional growth, committed mentorship and clinical research. Alongside dedicated attending physicians and enthusiastic colleagues, residents strive for excellence in their training and provide high-quality healthcare in patient-centered environments and community-oriented service.

Program Details

Residency is undoubtedly one of the most challenging parts of your medical career. We are focused on making the time you spend with us as a resident of high value to you now and in the future.

Hospital rotations are supervised by a small group of core teaching hospitalists to allow you to focus on learning patient care instead of trying to contact multiple attendings. Teaching faculty get to know you well, understand your learning needs and coach you effectively.

We use a 4:1 scheduling system. Continuity clinic is scheduled for a full week every five weeks, rather than scattered throughout the month or as a single block a few times per year. This promotes continuity with your clinic patients so that you get to see patients improve as a direct result of your care. Fewer transitions let you focus on learning about and caring for the patient in front of you, in both the clinic and the hospital.

Elective rotations include a strong mix of inpatient and outpatient experiences that are representative of real-life for hospitalists, specialists and primary care.

The majority of our didactic time is scheduled for one half-day per week. This minimizes transitions between clinical and learning responsibilities. We focus on using a variety of evidence-based teaching/learning techniques to improve understanding and retention and to make learning enjoyable.

As an intern, you will participate in the Resident-Ally Mentorship Program. Our Nurse Mentors are invaluable! Early on, Nurse Mentors help interns learn to effectively navigate our hospital system. The mentorship also helps interns to maximize the power of effective nurse/physician teamwork to achieve excellent patient care.

We are committed to continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and resident learning experiences. Resident feedback and engagement are key to program innovation and vitality.

Stipend for on-call meals is paid half in July and half in January

New residents and fellows receive up to $500 for orientation if it takes place before the official contract employment date.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Family Medicine Residency Program

We received our ACGME accreditation May 21, 2020

Applicants must have graduated within the last two years, with exceptions for military and public service. The program director reviews all of the applications to our program and evaluates the applicants’ overall skills and professional achievements; a decision to invite a candidate for an interview is based on several factors, not only the medical school graduation year

We currently only accept J-1 Visa applicants

Not at the moment of your application. We do request that you submit an ECFMG Status Report with your ERAS common application

Charleston is one of the country’s most beautiful, historic and culturally rich regions. Sports teams include Carolina Stingrays hockey, Charleston RiverDogs baseball, and Charleston Battery soccer teams. Charleston is home to multiple festivals - the Spoleto Festival, SEWE Festival, Charleston Bluegrass Festival, Steeplechase Festival, Scottish Games Festival are only a few! Charleston is within easy driving distance of several beaches, including Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, Kiawah Island and Edisto Island, and boaters/kayakers have miles of rivers to enjoy. Charleston has many great restaurants to enjoy after a busy but relaxing day
