HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake

Clear Lake stands as a 532-bed, full-service acute care hospital serving the Houston Bay area and its neighboring communities. With a deep commitment to delivering advanced healthcare services while maintaining a compassionate, patient-centered approach, our offerings encompass a Level II Trauma Center, a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a dedicated pediatric emergency center, and the region's exclusive heart hospital located south of the Texas Medical Center.

Our resident training experience is optimized through a combination of faculty and curriculum development, access to both inpatient and outpatient facilities, a diverse patient population, and institutional enthusiasm. Residents are presented with opportunities to engage in research endeavors and explore unique rotations.

Rotations at Clear Lake encompass a wide range of specialties, including acute care surgery, anesthesiology, colon and rectal surgery, endocrinology, endoscopy, general surgery, head and neck surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, orthopedic surgery, surgical critical care, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma, urology, vascular surgery, and night float rotations.

Bay Area Surgicare Center

Bay Area Surgicare Center has been in operation since 1979 and offers a multifaceted facility specializing in a variety of medical fields. It has been dedicated to delivering high-quality outpatient surgical care to the Clear Lake region for over four decades. The center offers a broad spectrum of surgical treatments and services, spanning pediatrics, gynecology, general surgery, urology, and gastroenterology.

During their PGY-2 and PGY-5 years, residents will have the opportunity to complete rotations at Bay Area Surgicare Center, gaining invaluable experience in general surgery and endoscopy. The endoscopy team will consist of a resident under the direct supervision of a board-certified faculty member, alongside board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and surgical technicians—all of whom possess professional expertise in surgical and post-anesthesia care.

Bay Area Surgicare Center is a cutting-edge facility boasting six state-of-the-art operating rooms and two dedicated GI procedure rooms. Equipped with the latest technological advancements and the most current surgical equipment, the center provides an ideal learning environment. As residents advance through their training, they will acquire proficiency in therapeutic procedures, including but not limited to biopsies, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD), hernia repairs, and hemorrhoid banding procedures.

Extant Healthcare Clear Lake

Extant Healthcare has been dedicated to crafting trauma programs for both large and small community hospitals, as well as regional trauma centers, for over 16 years. With a primary focus on general surgery and critical care, the Extant care team is unwavering in their commitment to upholding the highest standards for both their healthcare professionals and their patient community.

During their PGY-1, PGY-2, PGY-4, and PGY-5 years, residents will partake in rotations at Extant Healthcare Clear Lake, where they will gain valuable experience in providing outpatient follow-up care for trauma patients. The faculty is composed of board-certified surgeons who are deeply dedicated to the art of teaching while simultaneously prioritizing patient safety and delivering the utmost in compassionate patient care.

Residents will enjoy protected time to participate in weekly conferences and didactic sessions, during which they will be excused from their clinical duties. All presentations will be meticulously recorded and made available in digital format for any residents who are unable to attend in person, ensuring comprehensive access to educational resources.

Texas Oncology – Webster

Texas Oncology is dedicated to one primary mission: helping their patients fight against cancer and blood disorders. In the Houston area, Texas Oncology delivers comprehensive cancer treatment and care, employing cutting-edge technologies and innovative therapies.

The Texas Oncology care team centers their approach around the patient, providing care that is characterized by accessibility, continuity, comprehensiveness, a family-centered approach, coordination, and compassion. The array of services offered encompasses colon and rectal surgery, genetic testing, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, and comprehensive breast care.

During their PGY-2, PGY-3, and PGY-5 phases, residents will complete rotations at Texas Oncology, focusing on surgical oncology. Here, they will amass experience in the management of both benign and malignant conditions of the colon and rectum through minimally invasive procedures, colonoscopies, and anorectal interventions. Beyond cancer screenings, residents will acquire skills for treating non-cancerous ailments like diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hemorrhoids, fecal incontinence, rectal prolapse, fistula, fissure, colostomy, and ileostomy, employing a combination of surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Throughout the breast surgery rotation, residents will collaborate with breast surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They will acquire hands-on experience in managing both cancerous and benign breast conditions, utilizing an extensive array of imaging and diagnostic techniques, therapies, and treatment modalities. Supervised by board-certified faculty, residents will thrive in a multidisciplinary team setting, further enhancing their expertise and skills.

Surgical Specialists of Clear Lake

Surgical Specialists of Clear Lake stands as a comprehensive healthcare center dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to patients residing in Houston and its neighboring areas. The care team consists of board-certified surgeons specializing in a range of surgical disciplines, including general, cardiovascular, breast, colon, and rectal surgeries. Their patient population spans from older adolescents to adults.

During their training, residents will undergo rotations at Surgical Specialists of Clear Lake for their continuity clinic experience. Within the Clear Lake Medical Group rotation, residents will encounter a diverse patient group, including individuals with surgically complex issues encompassing benign, chronic, and malignant conditions. The continuity clinic experience places a strong emphasis on patient care within an office setting. Residents will acquire skills for comprehensive patient evaluation, the development of evidence-based treatment plans, the assumption of the primary provider role for a personal panel of patients, and the cultivation of the necessary competencies for delivering high-quality, long-term care. The ultimate objective is to mold residents with a broad knowledge base capable of managing intricate medical and surgical cases, all while maintaining a compassionate approach to patient care.

Residents will also be trained in effectively communicating treatment plans with primary care physicians, both through verbal communication and written documentation. They will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with a dedicated team that includes nurses, medical assistants, social workers, financial counselors, and laboratory technicians. Surgical Specialists of Clear Lake provides the essential resources, clinical learning environment, and patient diversity to fully support the program and residents.

The continuity clinic is well-equipped, featuring a spacious procedure room, seven examination rooms, and an expansive resident workroom equipped with conference facilities. Importantly, the continuity clinic is conveniently located on the same campus as HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, affording residents full access to the GME building at the primary site during this rotation.
