Research Family Medicine Residency is a 40+ year old 3-year ACGME accredited residency program in the heart of KC, MO. Our residency classes are 8/8/8 and we are an unopposed residency program (for primary care) at RMC. Our Sponsoring Institution - Research Medical Center is a 590-bedded, Level 1 Trauma, CODE Stroke and CODE STEMI center. Core Pediatric rotations are done at Children's Mercy Hospital, a tertiary care referral pediatric center. Residents do their continuity clinics at Goppert-Trinity; 25,000 outpatient visits/year with resident continuity panels established in years 1, 2 and 3.

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of 30 blocks of core rotations and 6 blocks of electives.

Tracks

Tracks are optional. Residents can participate in multiple tracks should they choose. A POCUS (Point Of Care Ultrasound) track and hospitalist medicine track are also being developed.

  • Track 1: Integrative medicine
Partnership through the University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. Participating residents will undergo extra training regarding integrative approaches to common ailments through the U of A modules, and have regular dedicated clinic days for patients seeking integrative approaches to their conditions under supervision of a faculty physician accredited in Integrative Medicine.
  • Track 2: Community Medicine (HIV/Hep C/Gender affirming care)
Partnership through KC Care, a local Federally Qualified Health Center, where our residents regularly see a high volume of patients with diverse socioeconomic needs, as well as patients seeking treatment for HIV and Hepatitis C care.
  • Track 3: Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)
Residents will regularly see a dedicated panel of patients for osteopathic medicine treatments under the training of NMM trained professors from Kansas City University.

  • Track 4:Hospitalist Track
To earn this accreditation, residents will organize elective blocks on their schedule around hospital based disciplines - cardiology, nephrology, neurology, etc, and are required to take an elective month in the ICU on top of the required PGY2 block all residents take. Residents will have required numbers of hospital-based procedures (endotracheal intubation, central line cannulation, thoracentesis, etc.).

We have a lecture schedule throughout the year involving topics respective of the broad scope of Family Medicine. Additionally, we have noon conferences several times per month with miscellaneous lectures, resident presentations, grand rounds, and journal club.

4-5 times per year, we have scheduled Procedure Workshops, where residents have the afternoon blocked off to learn/practice/refresh skills around a singular procedural topic. A few examples of Procedure Workshops in recent years:

  • Dermatology procedures
  • Laceration repair
  • IUDs and Nexplanon
  • Basics of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
  • Ultrasound-guided joint injections
  • Colposcopy

Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS):

We have a strong POCUS curriculum led by several of our faculty physicians. New residents gain experience with an introduction to POCUS course and have access to the GME simulation workshop to refine their skills. With multiple accessible state of the art ultrasound machines available for clinicians at our clinic and throughout the hospital, there are ample opportunities to apply ultrasound skills at the bedside. We also offer an elective rotation to further studies and develop proficiency with point of care ultrasound.
