Welcome from our Program Director

Welcome to the Riverside Community Hospital Radiology Residency Program! On behalf of the Department of Radiology, I am excited to introduce you to our outstanding Southern California program. Launched in July 2020, we are an ACGME accredited 4-year residency that matriculates 4 residents per year.

About our program

The Riverside Community Hospital four-year radiology residency is a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The residency program combines the best of the academic medical center’s subspecialty teaching with the supportive and friendly environment of a community hospital.

Our four-year program has 4 residents at each training level, for a total complement of 16 residents. All of our radiology faculty are fellowship trained and demonstrate strong academic track records. As a relatively young group of radiologists, we are eager to teach and are familiar with the recent revolution in radiology residency training, including the new board exam and curriculum. Our goal is to produce strong general radiologists with exposure to the many subspecialties that radiology has to offer.

Like most programs, we seek applicants who are highly motivated and show a commitment to clinical and academic excellence. Transcripts, clinical evaluations, letters of recommendations, and USMLE scores are all considered. However, since we are a close-knit and supportive department, we also place great emphasis on personality to ensure the right fit. We do not discriminate against applicants with unconventional backgrounds or with prior postgraduate training in other fields.
We interview in the range of 40-50 applicants.
No. We consider each candidate as an individual. To do so otherwise would be contrary to the philosophy of our program.
We have no absolute deadline but submission by November 15 is strongly encouraged.
We have not yet had any graduates from our program as we began the program in 2020. Our current third year residents are applying to fellowships now.
Four residents a year for a total of 12 residency positions.
Because we are a small residency, call may be more frequent than at some larger programs. All call is performed with contemporaneous attending oversight. We believe that the call experience is necessary for training, but that call should not be exhausting or abusive. We have a 3pm-11pm call rotation and a 11pm-7am rotation. We also have weekend day call shifts. There is no weekend overnight call.
We have one conference a day that is either in the form of a didactic presentation or case conference. Residents also participate in inter-departmental breast and pulmonary tumor boards, IR M&M, physics didactics, and journal club.
Riverside Community Hospital has a broad spectrum of cases. Since the bulk of pediatric imaging has migrated to dedicated pediatric hospitals, our residents perform their pediatric rotations at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Our residents work side-by-side with their faculty and have the same privileges and responsibilities as their residents. Additionally, our residents enjoy a PET nuclear imaging rotation at Loma Linda. Our residents can pursue a MSK MRI rotation with Dr. Crues and Lee at Radnet in Los Angeles. Here they have an unlimited number of cases to review in addition to participating in daily didactics and conferences with the Kerlan/Jobe Orthopedic Institute.
Resident autonomy is a priority of the Radiology department. While everything read by a resident is over-read by an attending, the residents are primary in protocoling radiological exams, departmental problem solving, and providing consults for visiting clinicians. As residents become more proficient in procedures, more independence is encouraged based on both resident and attending comfort level. There are no fellows in the Radiology department competing for complex cases or procedures. In addition, the residents are in charge of their own call schedule and scheduled vacation time.

There are several:

  • 20 days of annual vacation
  • Five discretionary days for medical appointments, unforeseen circumstances, etc.
  • Ability to decide when to take vacation with some minor restrictions.
  • Ability to participate in call schedule making.
  • Coverage for AIRP tuition, ABR fees, and Medical License fees.
  • Hospital provided work iPhone and laptop.
  • StatDx, eAnatomy, Radprimer, and Radexam Subscriptions.
  • Expenses covered for travel costs if presenting research at a conference.
  • Dedicated GME building with well stocked resident lounge, state of the art conference rooms, resident gym and individual call rooms.
Yes. Residents are given a $300 meal stipend each month on top of a $950 call stipend for the year. The residents get 30% employee discount at the hospital cafeteria.

More advanced and versatile residents

  • With no fellows in the way, residents gain direct, hands-on training in diagnostic and interventional procedures that are otherwise reserved for fellows in other programs.
  • The relationship between faculty and residents is close and personal, with attendings working one-on-one with residents throughout each day. Case discussions and direct feedback drive each resident to a higher level of clinical competence and confidence.
