Welcome letter
Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at HCA Healthcare Riverside! Training is an exciting step in your medical career, and we are delighted that you are interested in taking this next step with our program.
Riverside Community Hospital is located in the heart of downtown Riverside. We are a Level 1 Trauma Center, and we serve a diverse ethnic and socioeconomic patient population. As both a hospital and a training program, "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life."
About our program
Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program at HCA Healthcare Riverside! The General Surgery Residency Program is a fully accredited five-year ACGME clinical program. We currently have 3 categorical general surgery residents per year. Applicants must have 3 letters of recommendation and have passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) to be eligible for our program. Applicants must submit their application via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) to apply through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).
Our program provides residents with abundant and early operative experiences. Chief residents graduate with over 1000 cases each, well above the required minimum for graduation. During training, residents will have appropriate, graduated autonomy under the guidance and supervision of our clinical faculty. We also expect our senior residents to serve as teaching assistants for our junior residents. All major surgical subspecialties are performed at Riverside Community Hospital, from bread-and-butter general surgery to surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic surgery, endocrine surgery, and vascular surgery. The hospital has multiple da Vinci robot systems, and we have developed a resident robotic curriculum to supplement resident education and training in this area. The residency program also has important affiliations with surrounding hospitals, including Loma Linda Medical Center (pediatric surgery and solid organ transplant) and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (burn surgery). We do not have any surgical subspecialty fellows at Riverside Community Hospital, so there is no competition for resident cases.
Mission statement
