Like most programs, we seek applicants who are highly motivated and show a commitment to clinical and academic excellence. Transcripts, clinical evaluations, letters of recommendations, and USMLE scores are all considered. However, since we are a close-knit and supportive department, we also place great emphasis on personality to ensure the right fit. We do not discriminate against applicants with unconventional backgrounds or with prior postgraduate training in other fields.

We currently have 15 residents in our program and will quickly fill out our full complement of 20 residents in the years to come. Our program will have five residency slots for the upcoming interview cycle.

We had our inaugural class graduate at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year. All five of our graduates matched into highly competitive fellowships.

Because we are a small residency, call may be more frequent than at some larger programs. All call is performed with contemporaneous attending oversight. We believe that the call experience is necessary for training, but that call should not be exhausting or abusive. We have a 4pm-12am call rotation and a 10:30pm-7:30am rotation. We also have weekend day call shifts.

We have lunch conference once a day that is either in the form of a didactic presentation or case conference. Residents also participate in inter-departmental breast and pulmonary tumor boards, IR M&M, physics didactics, and journal club.

Riverside Community Hospital has a broad spectrum of cases. Since the bulk of pediatric imaging has migrated to dedicated pediatric hospitals, our residents perform their pediatric rotations at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Our residents work side-by-side with their faculty and have the same privileges and responsibilities as their residents. Additionally, our residents enjoy a PET nuclear imaging rotation at Loma Linda. Our residents can pursue an MSK MRI rotation with Dr. Crues and Lee at Radnet in Los Angeles. Here they have an unlimited number of cases to review in addition to participating in daily didactics and conferences with the Kerlan/Jobe Orthopedic Institute.

Resident autonomy is a priority of the Radiology department. While everything read by a resident is over-read by an attending, the residents are primary in protocoling radiological exams, departmental problem solving, and providing consults for visiting clinicians. As residents become more proficient in procedures, more independence is encouraged based on both resident and attending comfort level. There are no fellows in the Radiology department competing for complex cases or procedures. In addition, the residents are in charge of their own call schedule and scheduled vacation time.

Yes. Residents receive a 30% employee discount and a $300 meal allowance each month, to be utilized at our facilities cafeteria. Residents receive a $950 call stipend per academic year, provided in two installments, to be utilized for offsite rotations. Additionally, our residents have 24/7 access to their resident lounge kitchen, which is well stocked with grab & go items and coffee.

• With no fellows in the way, residents gain direct, hands-on training in diagnostic and interventional procedures that are otherwise reserved for fellows in other programs.
• The relationship between faculty and residents is close and personal, with attendings working one-on-one with residents throughout each day. Case discussions and direct feedback drive each resident to a higher level of clinical competence and confidence.
