Overview of clinical experiences

Fellows gain clinical experience across all levels of addiction-focused care, from inpatient acute psychiatric care, inpatient consultation service and a range of outpatient rotations. Clinical rotations and community partners include:

1. Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center

Southern Hills Hospital is a 262+ bed acute care general hospital with an 80-bed Pavilion for behavioral health care. Construction of additional two floors is underway and anticipated to be operational within the next year.

Fellows spend 2 blocks on the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry service and 2 blocks on the Adult Inpatient Addiction Psychiatry service. In addition, they perform consultations with the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service covering the medical-surgical services and the emergency department.

2. Behavioral Health Group (formerly Center for Behavioral Health)

Behavioral Health Group (BHG) is a national network of methadone clinics with 3 addiction treatment centers in Las Vegas among its 21 facilities in 8 states across the United States. BHG facilities provide the full range of outpatient treatments as a federally licensed opiate treatment program (OTP).

Key to its services, BHG provides outpatient-based opioid treatment (OBOT), including all three federally approved medications for opiate use disorder (OUD): buprenorphine (oral and injectable formulations), naltrexone (oral and injectable formulations), and methadone. Supporting efforts in harm reduction, BHG has the first syringe vending machine based in one of its Las Vegas treatment centers.

Fellows spend 3 blocks rotating through the various Las Vegas sites, gaining experience in methadone maintenance as well as focused training in buprenorphine induction and maintenance, and naltrexone, including injectable formulations. During these blocks, they have opportunity to attend sessions at a WestCare Nevada Community Triage Center, a safety net full spectrum treatment program, participate in hospital consultations, IOP at local treatment centers and conduct site visits to local harm reduction centers.

4. The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS)

The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) in North Las Vegas is a full-service medical center with fellow rotations combining service and training on the Acute Inpatient Psychiatry service and the Las Vegas VA Residential Recovery & Renewal Center (LVR3).

Fellows gain experience during their 3 blocks at the VASNHS, working with veterans who have complex co-occurring disorders and participating in the gambling addiction program unique to the VA system.

5. Continuity Clinic

Fellows spend ½ day per week at Partida Corona Medical Center, the primary care and addiction medicine outpatient practice of Dr. Jose Partida Corona, first ADM fellow in our program. While there, the fellows managing a panel of patients with substance use disorders as well as provide general medical care to a panel of patients.

6. Electives

Available in Non-Interventional Pain Management, HIV/Hepatitis C Care, Correctional Medicine, Adolescent Psychiatry. Opportunities are available for other electives in Perinatal Addiction and Management of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, and Critical Care/ICU with focus on management of complicated withdrawal.
