Welcome to Nevada’s first Addiction Medicine Fellowship, based at Southern Hills Hospital as part of the HCA Healthcare Sunrise Health GME Consortium. This 1-year multi-disciplinary fellowship with key community partners, provides a broad-spectrum, evidence-based and community-focused foundation for new Addiction Medicine specialists. Research and scholarly activity are integrated throughout the fellowship.
We invite practicing physicians and graduate residents to Be Part of the Solution and who are passionate about our HCA mission - “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life” – as it applies to caring for individuals and families with substance use disorders. We are recruiting for up to 4 fellows.
Nevada ranks 48th in the US for access to primary care physicians and 50th in the US for access to psychiatrists. Similarly, access to care for those with substance use disorders is severely limited. According to the CDC, drug overdose deaths continue to rise in our country, and in 2017 alone, 70,237 people died from a drug overdose, primarily from opioids, escalating further during the COVID pandemic. According to the Nevada Opioid Crisis Needs Assessment, Nevada ranked 13th in opioid prescribing rates (2016).
Clearly, it is time for change!
With our hospital and community partners, our Fellowship prepares compassionate and competent graduate physicians for clinical and academic careers in Addiction Medicine, utilizing evidence-based addiction prevention and treatment services for all patients, families and communities – as clinicians, educators and patient- and community-advocates to address diseases of addiction in a collaborative, innovative environment.
Fellows train across the spectrum of settings, from Sunrise Health hospitals, the Southern Hills Hospital Behavioral Health Pavilion for psychiatric inpatient and consult-liaison services, to community-based Addiction Treatment Centers, the Center for Behavioral Health providing methadone and other MOUD medications, and the Veterans Administration services.
