Program Curriculum

Based at two of South Florida’s outstanding healthcare institutions, JFK Medical Center and the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been able to design a state-of-the-art residency program using modern learning principles optimally linking patient care responsibilities with the study of the art and science of medicine.

Our patient populations provide hands on experience with the full spectrum of medical illnesses preparing our residents and students for the challenges ahead. Our program uses the latest technology to optimize patient care including electronic medical records, physician order entry, hand-held ultrasound, and web-based learning and evaluation tools.

We strive to create a learning environment that balances the rigors of residency training with personal life, allowing our residents to take full advantage of living in the tropical paradise that is South Florida. We strongly believe that happy and healthy house staff deliver the highest quality care to our patients. Our rotations have no overnight call and we have designed our ward admission system to allow time to read about patients as they are admitted.

In addition to the traditional elective rotations our program offers opportunities to work directly with hospital leadership on quality and patient safety initiatives.

We evolved to a 4+2+2 system. which focuses the ambulatory continuity experience in two week blocks between a traditional four-week rotation followed by a traditional two-week rotation. The ambulatory week includes subspecialty ambulatory experiences, half day educational conferences, wellness activities and half-day PGY specific conference. The PGY 2 and 3 ambulatory week allows flexibility to pursue sub-specialty interests.
