MISSION

The HCA Florida Healthcare/Lawnwood Hospital Transitional Year Residency Program develops well-rounded, clinically competent physicians prepared to excel in their chosen specialties and committed to HCA Healthcare's foundational mission: the care and improvement of human life.

Situated within a 492-bed, Level II Trauma Center serving Florida's Treasure Coast, the program provides rigorous, broad-based clinical education distinguished by individualized learning plans (ILP) developed collaboratively with the Program Director to support each resident's career trajectory. Residents engage in scholarly activities, including research, quality improvement, and journal club while learning evidence-based practice and critical appraisal skills. A longitudinal didactic curriculum, high-fidelity simulation, and structured competency assessments ensure competence across all ACGME core competencies.

Central to our mission is training physicians who function as effective interprofessional team members. Residents cultivate communication skills, practice patient-centered care within diverse settings, and are mentored by faculty modeling professionalism, clinical excellence, and community dedication. The program balances supportive mentorship with challenges that help residents reach their full potential.

AIMS

  1. Deliver structured, broad-based clinical training across core rotations (internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine) and individualized electives, building diagnostic reasoning and clinical skills for specialty-specific success.
  2. Provide individualized mentorship and career guidance through the Program Director's direct relationship with each resident, supported by an ILP.
  3. Cultivate evidence-based practice and lifelong learning through scholarly activities, quality improvement projects, M&M conferences, and journal club engagement.
  4. Train effective interprofessional team members in a high-acuity setting, fostering communication, patient-centered care, and collaborative decision-making for diverse populations.
  5. Develop professionally competent, adaptable clinical leaders embodying HCA Healthcare's commitment to human care throughout their careers.
  6. Ensure progressive competence across ACGME core domains through structured assessments, simulation training, direct observation, and systematic feedback.
