Curriculum and rotation schedule
Competencies are evaluated using the OBGYN Milestones. Milestones provide residents with progressive goals to encourage individual resident’s progress in the following areas:
- Patient Care: the intern/resident is demonstrating good progress in patient care, assessment and management, and in the operative skills and managing post-operative patients..
- Medical Knowledge: the intern/resident is continuing to increase medical knowledge and is able to apply this knowledge to providing competent patient care.
- Systems-based Practice: the intern/resident is effective in utilizing and accessing health system resources, and works to improve the health care process.
- Practice-based learning: the intern/resident is demonstrating the ability to see evidence based medicine, manage such information and apply it to patient care situations.
- Professionalism: the intern/resident demonstrates respect, compassion, honesty and reliability toward patients, nursing, staff and colleagues.
- Interpersonal & Communication Skills: the intern/resident develops good relations with patients, families, nursing staff and colleagues through communication skills and has a willingness to listen and work collaboratively.
In each of these areas of evaluation an intern/resident is provided with a score on a 6 month basis. Each evaluation is reviewed by faculty, the program coordinator the assistant program director. The evaluation is presented to each intern/resident by the program director. Each area of the milestone evaluation is provided with a score. The selection of a level implies that the resident substantially demonstrates the milestone of that level, as well as the lower levels. The levels are as follows:
Level 1: the resident demonstrates milestones expected of an incoming resident
Level 2: the resident is advancing and demonstrates additional milestones, but is not yet performing a mid-residency level.
Level 3: the resident continues to advance and demonstrates additional milestones, consistently including the majority of milestone targeted for residency.
Level 4: the resident has advance so that he or she now substantially demonstrates the milestones targeted for residency. This level is designed as the graduation target.
Level 5: the resident has advanced beyond performance targets set for residency and is demonstrating aspirational goals which might describe the performance of someone who has been in practice for several years. It is expected that only a few exceptional resident will reach this level.
CREOG Educational Objectives Core Curriculum in Obstetrics & Gynecology:
- To master the medical knowledge set forth by the CREOG Educational Objectives using a structured curriculum addressing primary and preventive care, obstetrics, gynecology, and the subspecialties within women’s health.
- To become proficient to perform &/or understand the Specialty Specific Procedures listed in the CREOG Educational Objectives by teaching residents general surgical principles and care; and by continuously evaluating individual surgeries and giving feedback on technical skills
- To critically analyze the medical literature using principles of evidence based medicine through participation in structured discussions and in clinical research, quality improvement or patient advocacy by completing a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor and Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium Research Director
- To provide exposure and experiences in the subspecialty areas of gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine and urogynecology (female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery), teaching the resident to make appropriate initial evaluations, recognize his/her limitations and the indications for referral
- To stimulate interest in subspecialty fellowship training for those wishing to pursue these options
- To develop confident clinical judgment and a high level of skill in clinical problem solving in the office and acute care environments, and to learn to effectively utilize appropriate diagnostic techniques and skills in the evaluation and management of all patients
- To prepare the resident for medical practice and consultation for certification through successful completion of the basic written and oral American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Examinations
- To successfully completed the four-year residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology through the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium, completing all requirements for graduation in accordance with ACGME and ABOG guidelines by demonstrating the professional ability to practice competently and independently
