Thank you for your interest in the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium. The program was accredited in 2016 for 28 residency positions. The first class of residents began work July 2016.

PGY-1 Categorical and Preliminary Positions:
Applications will be accepted only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), through the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges), and participation in the NRMP (National Resident Match Program). We require the following documents from each applicant via ERAS:

Interview Process for PGY-1 Positions
After a review of applications, invitations to interview will be sent to qualified applicants. The Sunrise Health GME Consortium General Surgery Residency Program will include the available dates for interviews in the invitations.
Mission statement
The MountainView General Surgery program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values and ideals.
Program overview
Surgery residents at MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada have access to a state-of-the-art-facility and advanced technology including:
- 12 Operating Rooms (including 2 open heart surgical suites)(14 as of Feb. 2021)
- 3 Endoscopy Suites
- 1 Cysto Room
- Endoscopic Ultrasound Technology
- 5 Robotic Surgery Systems for training in minimally invasive surgical procedures
All of this is facilitated by our primary teaching site for the program: MountainView Hospital, a medical center with 408 beds, that is fully equipped for medical and surgical specialties and augmented by the support of our teaching staff. Residents of the program will benefit from advanced technology and the diverse patient population at MountainView, making MountainView Hospital an ideal site for training the next generation of surgeons. Our long-standing tradition of hands-on learning and an environment of collaborative evidence-based patient care, sets our graduate medical education program at MountainView Hospital apart as a leading residency option for students and physicians in training.
Residents rotate at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center for trauma, acute care surgery and surgical critical care, as well as for pediatric surgery. Sunrise is a 690-bed Level II Trauma Center.
The Las Vegas Institute for Robotic Surgery
MountainView Hospital's Las Vegas Institute for Robotic Surgery is one of HCA’s premier Advanced Robotic Surgery Programs. The Institute sees a wide variety of advanced surgery cases.
This exposure gives residents the hands-on opportunity to develop their skills in the field of minimally invasive procedures utilizing the robotic surgical system, including:
- General Surgery
- Thoracic Procedures
- Urologic Procedures
- Head and Neck Procedures
- Colorectal Procedures
In addition, MountainView Hospital is the only hospital in Las Vegas that is participating in the Fluorescence Imaging + ICG Dye (FIREFLY) clinical trial. This technology utilizes the directed imaging technique during minimally invasive surgeries. We are proud to be a leader in healthcare and in our community.
Conference schedule
The General Surgery Residency Program is an accredited GME program based at MountainView and Sunrise hospitals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Combined, these hospitals contain around 1,000 beds, including Sunrise Children’s Hospital. The surgical faculty provides a robust, in-depth training experience. The two hospitals together have 39 ORs, seven robotic systems, and 120 ICU beds. The surgeons perform cases across the spectrum of general, cardiothoracic, vascular, trauma, and pediatric surgery and the surgical subspecialties. The hospitals have the premier robotic surgery programs in the region. As a Level II Trauma Center, Sunrise Hospital cares for patients with complex, life-threatening conditions.
Sunrise Health’s Graduate Medical Education Consortium’s General Surgery residency program is led by Nancy Rivera, MD, FACS. The program is part of the transformation of MountainView and Sunrise, as they evolve into a destination for Graduate Medical Education.
Rotations at MountainView Hospital include General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. Rotations at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center include Emergency, Critical Care/ Trauma, and Pediatric Surgery.
Our current facilities include a state-of-the-art simulation facility, classroom and research space.
The General Surgery residency program is 5 years in length and does include a required research component.

FAQs
- All allopathic and osteopathic applicants must successfully complete USMLE Step 1. COMLEX Level 1 for osteopathic applicants only must also be taken before an interview offer can be made. Successful completion of both Step 2 CK and 2 CS or COMLEX Level 2CE and Level 2PE prior to ranking is required. All exams must be passed on the first attempt.
- No more than one year can have elapsed since medical school graduation.
- Applicants must meet the requirements for a restricted license for residency in the State of Nevada. View more information at the Nevada board of medical examiners website.
- LORs – Our program requires three letters of recommendation (one of which must come from a Surgery Faculty member). A letter of recommendation from the Surgery Department Chair is strongly recommended.
- S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident.
- We require an acceptable explanation of any break in education (if applicable).
- Yes, all applications and required documentation are submitted via Clinician Nexus. Application Requirements include:
- Transcripts
- COMLEX and/or USMLE Scores (Step I)
- A minimum score of 230 on the USMLE Step 1
- A minimum score of 505 on the COMLEX Step 1
- CV or resume
- Immunization records
- Pre-Check Background check
- Pre-Check Drug Screen
- Implementation Letter (provided by school)
- (Unfortunately, the State of Nevada does not allow foreign medical students to do core or elective rotations while in medical school.)
