Welcome from our program director
The mission of the HCA Houston Healthcare/University of Houston (Clear Lake) Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program is to train the next generation of surgical intensivists who demonstrate clinical excellence, compassion, integrity, and commitment to lifelong learning.
About our program
During the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship rotation at HCA Houston Clear Lake, fellows will gain comprehensive experience managing critically ill surgical patients. They will work alongside a specialized team of surgeons and intensivists to develop and execute tailored care plans to improve patient outcomes in a high-acuity setting. The fellows will receive hands-on training in advanced surgical techniques, critical care protocols, and the management of complex surgical cases. Opportunities will include involvement in trauma response, ventilator management, and post-operative care, providing a robust foundation in surgical critical care that emphasizes both clinical excellence and patient safety.
At HCA Houston Clear Lake, Fellows in the Surgical Critical Care rotation will benefit from close supervision by experienced board-certified surgeons and intensivists dedicated to enhancing medical education in Surgical Critical Care. HCA Houston Clear Lake is also a training site for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Surgery residents, as well as Thoracic Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery fellows, providing a collaborative learning environment where fellows and residents can share knowledge and skills. Under the guidance of faculty, fellows will engage in hands-on training and actively manage critically ill surgical patients while also taking on teaching roles to supervise and teach residents during rotations. This setting fosters clinical competence and professional development in a supportive team-based atmosphere.
The fellows will have protected time to attend weekly conferences and didactics. They will be excused from their clinical duties during educational time, ensuring they can fully engage in the learning experience. To accommodate any scheduling conflicts, all presentations will be recorded and available for review in a digital format.
