Mission Statement
The Medical Center of Aurora Psychiatry Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.
Program Overview
The psychiatry residency program was developed in 2017. The program is ACGME accredited with our first class expected to graduate in 2021.
We offer students a unique community hospital training environment marked by collegiality, collaboration and opportunity. Our goal is to create a nurturing, cohesive learning experience with a commitment to producing knowledgeable, practical and caring professionals who are committed to excellence in patient care and ongoing learning.
Graduate medical education programs in behavioral health have never been more important to our community and it's vitally important for teaching hospitals to invest in individuals interested in pursuing psychiatry.
Our program is rooted in the ACGME's core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
Our emphasis is on the humane application of scientific knowledge and preparation of graduates for continuing lifelong self-directed learning; cost-effective utilization of public resources; responsiveness to the needs of individuals and the community; and the highest standards of academic excellence and professional ethics.
These competencies carry residents across all four years of their program and guide everything we do and provide each resident with a solid infrastructure from which to grow into the best practitioner they can be.

FAQ
Applications are accepted September-January 15th. The program is accepting applications emailed here for the 2020 NRMP Match. The required documents for an application include three letters of recommendation, the Dean's letter, transcripts, USMLE/COMLEX transcripts and a personal statement. We would like at least one of the letters to be from a physician in Psychiatry. If you are an international applicant, we accept all applications through the national MATCH and ECFMG is required.
Applicants must have passed USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 and have taken both components of Step 2 or the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) Level 1 and have taken both components of Level 2. Having Step 3 is helpful as well, but not a requirement.
The Psychiatry program has 32 residents (8 PGY 1, 8 PGY 2, 8 PGY 3 and 8 PGY 4).
We are an 120-bed acute care hospital with a variety of ages, races, ethnicities and socioeconomic economic status. Our patient demographics are broad and have all ages and ranges from children to geriatrics. The spectrum of patients offers an excellent learning environment.
Clinical case conferences, M&Ms, grand rounds and journal club conferences are each held weekly. Four hours of didactics are held weekly.
Particularly well-qualified international medical school graduates may be considered for admission. International medical graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
No, US clinical experience is not required but it is strongly preferred. We do not consider observerships, externships and/or preceptorships to be clinical experience.
We are not currently offering observerships, externships or preceptorships.
Applicants must be recent (2 or less years) graduates from medical school to be considered competitive. Special exceptions will be considered for:
- Candidates entering a new residency after completion of a first residency in an ACGME accredited program
- Candidates with an MD or DO with a MPH/MS/PhD and extensive prior research experience after completion of an LCME or an AOA accredited medical or osteopathic medical school in the U.S. or Canada, or
- Candidates who have served a prolonged period as a general medical officer in the U.S. military.
International Medical Graduates (IMG's) are required to be ECFMG certified at the time of your application or far enough along in the application process that you will receive certification no later than December 31, 2017.
No. ECFMG is the sole sponsor of visas for physicians in clinical training programs.
